SPECIAL FEATURE
The aims and objectives of the language department
in our school and as stated in the new competencybased curriculum is to impart and develop the
learners’ oral skills as well as helping them to read
and write.
The main languages taught and spoken by learners
in our school are English and Kiswahili. In teaching
the language skills in our school, we in the
department focus on what the learners are able to
do with the languages rather than what they know
about it so that the languages are not designed
around the notion of subject knowledge but around
the notion of competency.
As the language teachers in our school, we think
first of the set of competencies our learners are to
acquire in each class that will be significant to
operate in the real world. Our role therefore
changes from one of being an information giver to
a designer of learning experiences.
By the time our learners transition to grade two,
we are proud to report that they are able to
communicate fluently in English and Kiswahili.
